a violist who enjoys performing solo, chamber, and orchestral works; occasionally teaching; and dabbling in composition through arrangements
Originally from Michigan, Kurt Tseng joined the North Carolina Symphony in 2020 as Associate Principal Viola. He has previously served as Section Viola with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Section Viola with the Des Moines Metro Opera.
Tseng has participated in many music festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Center, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and the Pacific Music Festival. As an avid chamber musician, Tseng has played music in many chambers, including a performance in Miami with the group Sodam and the All-Stars, of which he is a founding member. He also spent two years in Miami Beach as a fellow with the New World Symphony.
Tseng began his musical studies at age 5 on the piano and was a student of the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program at the University of Michigan, where he worked with Kelley Benson. He later pursued viola under the instruction of Patricia Pats Gurin. Tseng completed his undergraduate studies in the Boston area as part of the dual degree program between Tufts University and New England Conservatory. There he studied with Martha Katz and received a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology with a minor in Mathematics. He subsequently earned his master’s degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with Edward Gazouleas, and served as an Associate Instructor in music theory.
When not playing the viola, Tseng enjoys attempting to cook, bake, and make drinks, and also spending time with his husband Kevin Fitzgerald and their two dogs, Chipper and Bennie, who can be a real handful.

WORKS
All You Need is a Total Eclipse (2023) - 3 Violins (approx. 3:00)
This arrangement came about when a chamber group I was coaching needed a short "love-themed" piece to play for their Valentine's Day concert. Completed in less than a week, it is essentially a love ballad about love ballads.
Fantasy No. 4 (2022) - Violin, 2 Violas, and 2 Cellos (approx. 15:00)
Inspiration drawn from music from George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, Kristin Kuster's A Thousand Acres, and Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, to name a few.
Fantasy No. 3 (Based on Themes from Pique Dame) (2021) - Violin, 2 Violas, and Cello (approx. 15:00)
The main opera of interest for this fantasy is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades (Pique Dame), influenced by the worlds of Jean-Philippe Rameau's Platée and Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd.
Fantasy No. 2, Op. 2 No. 1 (2019) - Flute, Violin, and 2 Violas (approx. 15:00)
Continuing the one-time tradition, this piece centers around music from Giacomo Puccini's La bohème, with many references to Leonard Bernstein's Candide and Alban Berg's Wozzeck.
Fantasy Based on Themes from Rusalka (2018) - 2 Violins and 2 Violas (approx. 10:00)
Originally intended as a musical joke, this fantasy became the first of many inspired by the operas performed within a season at the Des Moines Metro Opera company and performed on the DMMO Orchestra's Chamber Music Concert. As the title clearly states, the bulk of material is drawn from Antonín Dvořák's Rusalka, with hints of Johann Strauss II's Die Fledermaus and Jonathan Dove's Flight.
Pop Medley (2017) - Violin, 4 Violas, and Double Bass (approx. 6:00)
A mashup of Viva la Vida (Coldplay) and Titanium (David Guetta ft. Sia). Premiered 2017 in Miami, FL, by my favorite group of all times:
Sodam and the All-Stars.
Yesterday (arr. Kurt Tseng) (2015) - 4 Violas (with optional Violin and Double Bass) (approx. 2:30)
My first attempt at arranging, performed by friends and colleagues of mine while at Indiana University.
